Who the heck am I?

Just call me Dan.  I'm a math and computer geek who also writes SF/F/H, usually under my full name, Daniel M. Hoyt.  Why use my full name?  I'm not exactly sure.  SF writers usually use their middle initials, so I did, too.  Just following the pack :-)

(Actually, it's probably because my wife, Sarah A. Hoyt, also uses her full name.  She's just so @#&! good that I just naturally wanted to emulate her.  Check out her critically-acclaimed novels and you'll see what I mean.  What she does to the English language is just plain poetic.  You'll become a fan.)

I currently have a full time job supporting the updating and re-architecting of a 40-something Fortran program working with the computational physics of rockets and their trajectories.  Fun stuff, really.  Under my tutelage, it's been completely ported to C++ and has an Eclipse-base Java UI, as well, so it's not exactly trivial.  In fact, it's rocket science!

As for my writing career, I have about a dozen genre short story creds, two anthologies edited with Martin H. Greenberg at Tekno, and I am currently shopping my first novel.

You can find my work in leading magazines and anthologies (many available on Amazon.com):

Esther Friesner's new anthology series with Baen. Yay! As for the story, let's just say I mowed a lot of lawns when I was growing up in the suburbs of Stow, Ohio.

My personal favorite of my published work.  I bought a guitar at a pawn shop, and this came about.  Don't ask me, I just write 'em — I don't have to understand why.

Dark fantasy, with the ghosts of Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães in Portuguese) and Christopher Columbus.  This was almost too much fun researching to be legal!

Fall 2003 (#18)

Yes, it's a vampire story from the perspective of a teenage girl.  SF is fantasy, really.  So are vampires.  So, they're practically the same genre, right?  Besides, I got my first cover credit :-))

I once found this story pirated in Russian on the web.  Officially, that's a bad thing.  Unofficially, it's kind of cool to be referred to as one of the "greats" of SF, along with Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein.
